License manager installation procedure (Windows 95)
|
------
|
What you need before installing
Before installing the license manager, you will need the following:
- an Ethernet adapter installed on your personal computer
- your Windows installation CD-ROM
- the hostname and hostid of your computer (see information below to obtain them)
- authorization codes from OmniMark Technologies
- a copy of "omflex40.exe", obtained from either your OmniMark CD-ROM or the OmniMark Technologies software download page
.
Downloading FLEXlm from the Web
If you are downloading FLEXlm from the OmniMark Technologies software download page
, create a temporary working directory and download the file "omflex40.exe" to it. Do not run "omflex40.exe" yet, as it will cause you to skip several important steps in the installation procedure.
Determining the hostname and hostid of your computer
To determine the hostname and hostid of the computer you are installing FLEXlm on, do the following:
- From a DOS prompt, type "winipcfg /all". You will be presented with information about your configuration.
- Copy down the hostname presented. If no hostname is given, see your Windows documentation about how to create one.
- Copy down the Adapter Address, omitting all hyphenation. This is your hostid.
Obtaining authorization codes
You may obtain authorization codes from your OmniMark Technologies sales representative. To get your authorization codes, you will need the hostid of the computer you will be installing FLEXlm on.
Configuring Windows 95
Windows 95 must be configured with certain protocols to run the license manager correctly. The following procedure outlines how you perform this configuration.
- Open the Control Panel.
- Double-click on the Network icon to open it, and select the Configuration tab.
- Ensure that the TCP/IP Protocol is listed, along with at least one of the following protocols (listed in order of preference):
- NetBEUI
- IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol
- NETBIOS support for IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol
- If none of the above protocols are listed:
- Insert your Windows 95 installation CD-ROM.
- Click the "Add" button.
- Select Protocol, and click the "Add" button.
- Select Microsoft under Manufacturers.
- Select the protocol from the list of protocols, and click the "OK" button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Check that one of the following clients is listed (select Control Panel - Network icon - Configuration tab):
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Client for Netware Networks
- If a client is not listed:
- Insert your Windows 95 installation CD-ROM.
- Click the "Add" button.
- Select Client, and click the "Add" button.
- Select Microsoft under Manufacturers.
- Select the client from the list of clients, and click the "OK" button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Again using Control Panel - Network icon - Configuration tab, ensure that your Ethernet adapter is installed.
- If your Ethernet adapter is not installed:
- Insert your Windows 95 installation CD-ROM.
- Click the "Add" button.
- Select Adapter, and click the "Add" button.
- Select the Manufacturer of your adapter.
- Select your adapter from the list of adapters, and click the "OK" button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- If any components were changed, you must now reboot the computer.
Creating a license file on Windows 95
The FLEXlm Setup program automatically allows the user to create a license file, unless the option is specifically de-selected during a Custom Install. During license file creation, the user has the option of specifying parameters such as "Host Name", "Port", "License File Name", and "License File Path". To ensure that FLEXlm functions properly, we recommend that you accept all defaults provided.
The entry field for "Host Name" requires special attention. The Windows 95 operating system may be stand-alone, or operate as part of a network. Your entry in the "Host Name" field will vary, depending on whether you have a stand-alone or a networked PC or laptop:
Stand-alone PC or laptop --
Typically when a PC or laptop is stand alone, it is not in contact with a LAN or WAN and there is no need for a DNS (Domain Name Service). You may check that DNS is off by going to Control Panel - Network - TCP/IP Protocol Properties - DNS Configuration tab. This setup is typical of laptops. If your PC or laptop fits this description, make sure it is properly configured to create a license file by doing the following:
- Ensure that you have an IP address specified (Control Panel - Network - TCP/IP Protocol Properties - IP Address Tab). (If you are not familiar with IP addresses and do not have one specified, please consult your Windows documentation.)
- Ensure that your PC is named (Control Panel - Network - Identification).
- Ensure that you have a host file in your main Windows directory that maps your PC name to your IP address. (Consult your Windows documentation if you are not familiar with host files.)
- The "Host Name" specified in your Setup program should be identical to your PC name.
Networked PC or laptop --
Often when a PC is part of a network there is a DNS Configuration specified. You may check your DNS configuration by going to Control Panel - Network - TCP/IP Protocol Properties - DNS Configuration tab. If your PC fits this description, make sure it is properly configured to create a license file by doing the following:
- Ensure that you have an IP address specified (Control Panel - Network - TCP/IP Protocol Properties - IP Address tab). (If you are not familiar with IP addresses and do not have one specified, please consult your Windows documentation.)
- Ensure that your PC is named (Control Panel - Network - Identification).
- Proceed to your DNS Configuration (Control Panel - Network - TCP/IP Protocol Properties - DNS Configuration tab).
- If you have both a "Host" and a "Domain" specified, the "Host Name" specified in your Setup program should be "Host.Domain".
- If you only have a "Host" specified, the "Host Name" specified in your Setup program should be identical to the "Host" field in your DNS Configuration (Note: This should be the same PC name as found under Control Panel - Network - Identification).
To create a valid license file, you must have authorization codes provided by OmniMark Technologies, and must type them exactly as shown. You may obtain authorization codes from your OmniMark Technologies sales representative.
Please note that the only characters present in these codes are the digits 0 through 9 and the letters A through F. (Note: If errors are made while entering the authorization keys, OmniMark will issue an authorization key failure and will not run. If you discover you have made an error, simply recreate the license file.)
Running omflex.40.exe
On your CD-ROM or in your download directory, double-click the file "omflex40.exe" and follow the instructions on the screen.
Make sure you remove the hyphens when you enter the hostid (Physical Address of your Ethernet Adapter).
Recreating the license file
If you want to recreate a license file at any time, use the utility "omnilm_setup"
:
- Download "omnilm_setup"
.
- Note that this utility is designed to create a license file, called license.dat, in the working directory. It cannot be parameterized.
- Locate your authorization code information.
- From an MS-DOS window, change directories to the License Manager directory (
cd c:\FLEXlm
).
- Run the authorization program by typing "
omnilm_setup
".
- The program will prompt you for answers, and create a file called "license.dat" in the current directory.
Starting the license manager on Windows 95
The FLEXlm Setup program creates a Start icon in your Windows 95 Start menu (if you selected this option for automatic startup), pointing to the file "omlm.bat" in the directory in which FLEXlm was installed. The file "omlm.bat" may be used to launch FLEXlm if you decide to remove the FLEXlm icon from your Start menu.
If you did not select the automatic startup option, the "omlm.bat" file must be started manually. The best way to do this is to use the "Find" function in your Start menu. Type "omlm.bat" and search the drive where the license manager was installed. Double-click on the file when it is found, and FLEXlm will start.
Testing your FLEXlm installation
To test that your FLEXlm installation is working properly once you have installed OmniMark, you may test it from your OmniMark directory by typing the following on the command line: omnimark -s test.om
. You should receive "success" as output.
Alternatively, go to the OmniMark Technologies software download page
and use the Control Panel FLEXlm utility "FLEXlm.cpl".
Uninstalling FLEXlm
Uninstall FLEXlm from your computer as follows:
- Make sure that no other applications on your machine or network are also using FLEXlm.
- Go to the Start menu, choose Settings - Control Panel - Services, and stop FLEXlm.
- Go to the Start menu, choose Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, select FLEXlm from the Install/Uninstall tab, and click on the Add/Remove button.
