Preparing to install Win32s
Win32s requires a Windows swapfile in order to run. If you do not already have a Windows swapfile, you will need to set one up.
To check, and possibly change, your swapfile settings, follow this procedure:
- Close all applications.
- Open the "Control Panel" in the "Main Program Group", and click on the "386 Enhanced" icon.
- Choose the "Virtual Memory" button in the Enhanced Window. The "Swapfile Settings" should show the type as "Permanent" or "Temporary".
- If the type is "None", click on the "Changes" button to get a "New Swapfile Settings" panel. This panel will recommend a type and a size. Note: if you are not sure what the type and size should be, simply click on the "OK" button to accept the recommended type and size.
- Reboot your system or restart Windows.
Installing Win32s
To install Win32s use the following procedure:
- Change to the "win32s" directory on the CD-ROM.
- Copy the "win32s.exe" file into a temporary directory. This file is a self-extracting executable, and you unpack it using the "wind32s.exe" command.
- Change directories into Disk 1 (a directory created by the unpacking process in the temporary directory).
- Launch the setup program "setup.exe", and follow the on-screen instructions.
- The setup program will ask you if you want to install "Freecell" (a game). You should install this game because it is used to verify that Win32s has been correctly installed).
Verifying Win32s
To verify that Win32s has been installed correctly:
- Change into the directory in which Win32s was installed, and locate the game "Freecell".
- Run the game. It will run correctly if Win32s is correctly installed. If "Freecell" doesn't work, Win32s is not functioning properly. If this occurs, remove Win32s from your system, and attempt to re-install it. If the problem continues, contact Microsoft Technical Support.
